Pour son projet Fixing the Shadows, Vanessa Cowling a utilisé des procédés photographiques sans appareil et peu nocifs pour l’environnement afin de capter, sans capturer, des silhouettes de végétaux. Lumen prints, anthotypes et phytogrammes composent ici une fresque aux couleurs parfois déroutantes. Obtenues par contact direct des plantes avec le support papier, ces images nées d’ombres sont ici en pleine lumière au sein de cette installation sur parois vitrées. Cette exposition est la première de l'artiste en Europe.
Vanessa Cowling est diplômée de la Michaelis School of Fine Art (UCT) en 1998. Sa première exposition personnelle, Strings and Flight, a eu lieu en 2005 dans le cadre du Cape Town Month of Photography. Elle a également participé à de nombreuses expositions collectives. Les éditions Struik ont publié son premier livre de photographies de voyage, West Coast Cederberg to sea, en 2006. Shoreline est la deuxième exposition personnelle de l'artiste à la Barnard Gallery, en même temps que celle de Stephen Inggs. En 2023, son projet Fixing the Shadows remporte l’appel à projet “Blurring the Lines”.
For her Fixing the Shadows project, Vanessa Cowling used camera-free, environmentally-friendly photographic processes to capture plant silhouettes. Lumen prints, anthotypes and phytograms make up a fresco of sometimes disconcerting colors. Obtained by direct contact between plants and paper, these images born of shadows are here in full light within this glass-walled installation. This exhibition is the artist's first in Europe.
