L'ÉTREINTE DU TOURBILLON

ANNE-LISE BROYER

Photography is an extremely literary and romantic space for Anne-Lise Broyer. The Look of Lost Souls series is inspired by two texts by Marguerite Duras, The Malady of Death and The Atlantic Man. This set of photographs and drawings creates a depth where the challenges and strength of the shore are represented. These images define a place in which the boundaries between inside and outside, between the intimate and the landscape become porous. A book of observation(s), The Look of Lost Souls is perhaps a series of notes, a song in which the story does not attempt to unite dreams and reality but seeks rather to adapt the need for a text and the emotion in reading it. Anne-Lise Broyer’s powerful and dense universe is based on evocation.

Anne-Lise Broyer examines the relationship between photography and other arts, especially with literature. It concerns introducing viewers to experiencing literature through looking. In this same logic of dialogue, she also examines areas of rubbing and merging between drawing with graphite pencil and film photography so as to reach a blurred area of perception. Born in 1975, Anne-Lise Broyer lives and works in Paris. Since she both graduated as a photographer and a typographer, her practice of photography is therefore peculiar, eager to simultaneously follow paths of graphic design, drawing and writing; looking through this hybridization to generate a kind of photographic literature, questioning the link between photography and artist books and trying to bring an unusual research in the display design of each one of her exhibition.  Regards de l'égaré (Fragments d'une saison pluvieuse), text by Bernard Noël (éditions Nonpareilles) was published in 2013. She’s represented by La galerie Particulière, Paris and Bruxelles.
