« Narratives / Relazioni. Baghdad: Red Zone, Green Zone, Babylon » est le premier volume d’une série qui raconte l’histoire de pays en guerre ou en situation de crise. Grâce à une combinaison d’images évocatrices qui décrivent le pays d’une manière abstraite mais précise, chaque lieu est révélé par un chemin narratif simplement suggéré par l’auteur et librement modifiable par le lecteur. Les images ne sont qu’à moitié lisibles et ne peuvent être visualisées entièrement qu’en extrayant les pages individuelles - qui ne sont pas reliées car la structure ressemble à celle d’un journal - dont la séquence peut être librement réorganisée à chaque fois. Dans ce premier volume le protagoniste est Bagdad, décrite comme une ville fortifiée, un endroit encore défendu par des murs et ainsi comparable à son précurseur historique, Babylone. Après Bagdad, la série se poursuivra avec des portraits de l’Afghanistan, du golf d’Aden, de l’Egypte et de la Syrie.

Giovanna Silva vit et travaille à Milan. Après un diplôme en science de l’architecture à l’Ecole Polytechnique de Milan, elle complète sa formation par une maitrise en anthropologie culturelle, ethnologie et ethnolinguistique à la Università Ca’ Foscari de Venise. De 2005 à 2007, elle collabore avec le magazine Domus avant de devenir l’éditrice photographique de la revue Abitare. Aujourd’hui artiste photographe, elle dresse le portrait de milieux urbains, s’appuyant sur ses connaissances en sciences sociales pour capturer l’identité propre des territoires. En s’attachant à l’influence de la situation politique et sociale, Giovanna Silva met en lumière la réalité vécue des villes et s’intéresse aux espaces du quotidien, rendus quasiment invisibles par l’habitude. Elle dirige Humboldt Book à Milan.


Narratives / Relazioni. Baghdad: Red Zone, Green Zone, Babylon is the first volume of a series that narrates, through images, the history of countries at war or in situations of crisis. Through a combination of evocative images that describe the country in an abstract but precise way, each place is revealed through a narrative path that is simply suggested by the author and can be freely modified by the reader. The images are only halfway legible and can be viewed entirely only by extracting the individual pages—which are not bound, because the structure is like that of a newspaper—whose sequence can be freely reorganized each time. In this first volume the protagonist is Baghdad, described as a fortified city, as a place still defended by walls and thus comparable to its historical precursor, Babylon. After Baghdad, the series will continue with portraits of Afghanistan, the Gulf of Aden, Egypt and Syria.

Giovanna Silva lives and works in Milano. From 2005 to 2007 she contributed to the journal «Domus», and from 2007 until S 2011 she was photo editor of the journal «Abitare». She photographed Renzo Piano and Zaha Hadid for the special issues of «Abitare» Being Renzo Piano and Being Zaha Hadid. She published Desertions, A+M bookstore, about her american journey with Enzo Mari; Baghdad, Green Zone, Red Zone, Babylon; Libya: Inch by Inch, House by House, Alley by Alley; Syria: a Travel Guide to Disappereance; Afghanistan 0rh-, Mousse Publishing and Good Boy and Walk Like an Egyptian, Motto Publishing.

She partecipated at 14. Mostra Internazionale di Architettura di Venezia with her project Nightswimming, Discotheques in Italy from the 1960s until now. The project was published by Bedford Press and AA London. She is in the editorial board of San Rocco Magazine. She is the editor of Humboldt Books.
