Pour son projet Fixing the Shadows<\/em><\/span>, Vanessa Cowling a utilis\u00e9 des proc\u00e9d\u00e9s photographiques sans appareil et peu nocifs pour l\u2019environnement afin de capter, sans capturer, des traces de v\u00e9g\u00e9taux. Lumen prints, anthotypes et phytogrammes composent ici une fresque aux couleurs parfois inattendues. Obtenues par contact direct des plantes avec le papier photosensible, ces images n\u00e9es d\u2019ombres sont ici en pleine lumi\u00e8re au sein de cette installation.
\nVanessa Cowling porte une attention particuli\u00e8re aux impacts \u00e9cologiques de sa pratique. Elle effectue des choix vertueux quant \u00e0 ses mat\u00e9riaux photographiques notamment par la r\u00e9cup\u00e9ration de papiers photosensibles destin\u00e9s au rebut ou par l\u2019utilisation de r\u00e9v\u00e9lateurs produits \u00e0 base de plantes. De la m\u00eame fa\u00e7on, ce soin s\u2019exprime \u00e9galement dans le respect avec lequel elle recueille la flore qui peuple ses images. L\u2019artiste privil\u00e9gie la collecte de fleurs, feuilles ou tiges tomb\u00e9es d\u2019elles-m\u00eames ou, quand cela n\u2019est pas possible, elle les pr\u00e9l\u00e8ve avec pr\u00e9caution selon un protocole non-invasif.<\/p>\n

Vanessa Cowling est une m\u00e8re, une conf\u00e9renci\u00e8re et une artiste qui vit et travaille actuellement au Cap, en Afrique du Sud. Elle est dipl\u00f4m\u00e9e de la Michaelis School of Fine Art (UCT) avec une licence en 1998, apr\u00e8s quoi elle a pass\u00e9 un certain nombre d’ann\u00e9es en tant qu’artiste photographe \u00e0 New York, Londres et \u00c9dimbourg avant de retourner dans son pays d’origine. Vanessa enseigne \u00e0 temps partiel au d\u00e9partement de photographie de l’UCT, o\u00f9 elle a r\u00e9cemment obtenu une ma\u00eetrise en beaux-arts avec mention. Elle a re\u00e7u la bourse Tierney 2023 et a remport\u00e9 le concours international \u00ab\u00a0Blurring the Lines\u00a0\u00bb, bas\u00e9 \u00e0 Paris, pour son travail de ma\u00eetrise. Ses recherches portent essentiellement sur les pratiques photographiques durables et l’environnement, et remettent en question le r\u00f4le de la photographie dans un paysage en mutation.<\/p>\n

For her Fixing the Shadows project, Vanessa Cowling used camera-free and environmentally-friendly photographic processes to reveal plant traces. Lumen prints, anthotypes and phytograms make up a fresco of sometimes unexpected colors. Obtained by direct contact between plants and redundant, light sensitive paper and film, these images born of shadows are here in full light within this installation.
\nVanessa Cowling pays particular attention to the ecological impact of her work. She makes virtuous choices when it comes to photographic materials, notably through the recovery of photosensitive paper destined to be thrown away, and the use of less toxic plant developers. The essential fixative is used until exhausted and then recycled. Similarly, her care is also expressed in the respect with which she collects the plants that populate her images. The artist prefers to collect flowers, leaves or stems that have fallen by themselves or, when this is not possible, she carefully removes them using a non-invasive protocol.<\/em>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Vanessa Cowling is a mother, lecturer and artist, currently living and working in Cape Town, South Africa. She graduated from the Michaelis School of Fine Art (UCT) with a BA Honours in 1998 after which she spent a number of years as a practicing photographic artist in New York, London and Edinburgh before returning home. Vanessa lectures part time in the Photography department at UCT and where she recently completed her MFA, earning a distinction. She was awarded the 2023 Tierney fellowship, and won the Paris based, international \u201cBlurring the Lines\u201d competition for her Masters work. Her research has a strong emphasis on sustainable photographic practices and the environment, questioning the role of photography in a changing landscape.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n
